The complete set of kings and queens of each traditional suit of playing cards, represented as different spirits of the voodoo pantheon. Voodoo deities are usually represented by images of catholic saints rather than direct depictions, so these portraits are derived from descriptions I've hear and from my own vision of them. From top left, the deities depicted are Ezili Freda, Ogou, Ayida Wedo, Danbala, Gran Brigitte of the Gede, Bawon Samedi of the Gede, Lasiren, and Agwe. I'll probably also submit these as individual pieces.
*A note on the character design:
I've been accused a few times or ripping off Disney with one my depiction of Baron Samedi. Although Disney did a great job with the imagery in Princess and the Frog, all of it was derived from a pre-existing culture. The Dr. Facilier (sp?) character is based on The Baron (or at least I assume he must be, as they look so similar), and so the resemblance is kind of unavoidable. I've been advised in critiques to change his design for the sake of my portfolio, but I just can't imagine The Baron any other way.
