Loa Cards- Baron Samedi by UlaFish Loa Cards- Baron Samedi by UlaFish
from my series of voodoo-themed playing cards, Baron Samedi of the Gede, King of Spades.

*A note on the character design:

I've been accused a few times or ripping off Disney with this particular character. Although Disney did a great job with the imagery in Princess and the Frog, all of it was derived from a pre-existing culture. The Dr. Facilier (sp?) character is based on Baron Samedi (or at least I assume he must be, as they look so similar), and so the resemblance is kind of unavoidable. I've been advised in critiques to change his design for the sake of my portfolio, but I just can't imagine The Baron any other way.

I was under the impression that Baron Samedi had more africanized features... Especially since the make it a point in the lore to knudge at the fact that his wife is white... Great interpretation though, to each his/her own!

Congratulations on such a wonderful piece. I just found this one, and can't wait to go look a the others in this set. (I am actually currently dressed as the Baron Himself, to celebrate this wonderful day)

There is NO DOUBT whatsoever that Disney utilized the VooDoo culture to create the "Good Dr." If you look on the walls of his "office" you will see PARTS of MANY Veve, the sigils used to call the various Loa/Lwa, and as he begins to do his thing, you cna clearly make out the Veve for Baron Samedi/Papa Gede...

Excellent work. Keep it up!

If anything they could say that the image of Dr.Facilier was taken from the serpent and the rainbow that's closer the the image of Baron Samedi and the similarity of Dr.Facilier than what you did.

I don't think yours looks anything like Dr.Facilier except maybe the color palette but you based it on a real culture like Disney did and that doesn't make it a rip off in anyway

I have always been interested in that Voodoo look.
And I love that you put it on these loa cards!
I love the colors and skull face paint. This is an excellent piece!

Don't let those Disney freaks get you down. I mean I love Disney and all, but they did not invent that look.
